Modern Military Airpower 1990 Present Thomas Newdick 9781907446214 Books

This is a book on the current world's air forces, both land-based and naval, and not on current or even past conflicts. So looking for a history of those in this volume won't work. Where information is available, and it's amazing so much is, as the volume imparts, this work has it. It tells you wings, squadrons and other units and what specific equipment by aircraft type they employ. It has excellent, small side view artwork of many current, very up-to-date aircraft in their individual and unit markings. It even has in one instance an aircraft pictured, which will not be deployed, if at all, for years to come, the Sukhoi T-50 Russian stealth fighter. It also show drawings of both the Chengdu J-10A and the improved brand new J-10B Chinese fighters (wonderful!). The text is wonderfully supportive with significant information on usage, development and numbers of respective models, as well as data on the set-up and control of the country's air assets.

If you like modern military aircraft or are interested in the world's air arms, please do yourself a favor and get this book. It may be the best of a very good series.

Modern Military Airpower 1990 Present Thomas Newdick 9781907446214 Books Reviews

I ordered this book believing it would be an authoritative reference on the strength and composition of today's air arms. I also expected it to follow up on the previous book in the series; Aircraft Of The Cold War 1945-1991, in describing the conflicts of the modern era just as that book gave very good descriptions of the many conflicts during the Cold War, as well as the aircraft that participated.

The book, needless to say, did not meet my expectations. It only shows some of the aircraft the world's air forces use, albeit with color profile artwork that cannot be faulted. The book makes the occasional mention of the 1991 Gulf War, The Bosnian Conflict, and the Global War on Terror(Overseas Contingency Operation as President Obama calls it. A title too stupid to even mention in the book.)but covers none of these conflicts in any noticeable detail.

The book is a great introduction to the world's air arms but is not a great reference for determining an the overall inventory( i.e numbers of aircraft) of any particular one. Great for the general enthusiast or someone being introduced to the world of military aviation, but for a hard-core, attention to detail fanatic like me, it falls short of the mark.
Happy to say, this book was/and still is a huge hit with my Engineer husband. Was part of his birthday gifts ... and he refers to and reads though it often! GOOD BUY WITH GREAT INFO AND DETAILS (so he says)
I love the illustrations in this book not only that but the information held within is also invaluable. I would recommend this book to any airplane lover.
All perfect.
Great product, good price and fast delivery
This book provides a good overview of the strength of military airpower around the world since 1990 on a region-by-region basis. Although the book is a bit dated thanks to annual reports on the strengths of the world's air forces, it is first non-reference book to list the inventories of air forces in the first half of the 2010s.
I finally gave up waiting for a new encompassing AIRCRAFT IDENTIFICATION GUIDE to be published. I finally paid my money to purchase this book. I wish I hadn't. One reviewer wrote how little information this book puts forth regarding each aircraft. I responded to said author that it would be unfair to expect much more than basic information as 1. Most readers haven't the knowledge to understand or care about such minutae, and 2. The book would be required to be published in volumes. Sadly, the reviewer underemphasized the lack of information about individual aircraft models.

The reason being, this book is not about individual aircraft models. This book is in no way, shape or form an "Aircraft Identification Guide." This book barely mentions most of the basic airframes of the most popular aircraft. The book lacks not only details, but photographs or depictions of such modern airborn warriors as the B-2 Spirit. Never does the book distinguish between an F-15A Eagle and an F-15E Strike Eagle. Certainly the book never attempts to offer details other than top speed, distance, altitude, etc. of the various aircraft, let alone even offer glimpses into the minutiae of ECM, ECCM, RWR, DIRCM, J-DAM, Have Quick, mm-wave, electronically steered phased array, etc.

The book barely offers enough information to delineate between a MiG-29 from an F/A-18 (again disregard the various models within each airframe.)

If you want a basic, grade school level overview of the airpowers of most nations, this would be the book for you. If you are seeking any semblance of an aircraft identification guide, or even an overview of most modern military aircraft, stay away from this book. It is not worth the price!!!!
